The Beginning

Making a jewel is a long process.
First of all, the conception, or the art to translate an idea into sketches. These last ones result from numerous hours of reflection and from searches on behalf of the creator, before ending in a concrete result.

From an inspiration are born sketches and models. The realization of these requires many attempts and corrections appealing to the creativity of the artist. . The continuation of the work passes by the choice of the material to work and the choice of the precious stones which will be used.

The Choice of the Stones

The choice of precious stones is not harmless, everything is accurately studied so that the harmony of the forms and the colours is completed, so giving a personality appropriate for every creation.

The choice of diamonds is made according to several factors, say 4C : the size (Cut), the colour (Color), the weight ( Carat) or still clarity (Clarity). All these variants have to be mastered in the perfection to obtain a glittering result.

1 - Cut and sizes

We use in best the light and the laws of its distribution (external and internal reflection, refraction and dispersal, considering the distribution of colour and the inclusions) to determine the proportions and give fire, brightness and sparkling.

2 - The colour

For the most part of gemstones and minerals, the most evident character or the aspect which strikes most at once the observer is the colour. The causes of tint of minerals are multiple and the complexity of the theories allowing their study does not facilitate the transmission of the knowledge on this subject.
In the exam of a stone, the colour is what we notice in the first one, but this colour is not sufficient to identify a stone exactly, , indeed a lot of stones gemstones are blue or red. The intrinsic colour does not exist, in fact the gemstone modifies the pervading light which crosses it and it is the observer who interprets this colour according to this light.

The theories allowing the study of the causes of the colourings of crystals rest all on the chemistry and the physics.

An international agreement was established for the range of the colours of the diamond: it is "Old Terms". Next to this agreement, France also has a standard. In the United States, the "Gemological Institute of America" elaborated a new scale.

3 - Weight

The unit of weight of diamonds is the carat, equivalent to 0,20 grams. Below a carat, we speak about hundredth (one carat amounts to 100 hurt / hundredth).
The weight of the stone determines its thickness, thus its diameter.

4 - Clarity

To estimate the purity of a diamond, it is necessary to study the number and the position of the inclusions which contains the stone. The degrees of purity of diamonds are classified by international standards of IF to SI.

  • IF Internally Flawless
  • VVS Very Very Small inclusion(s)
  • VS Very Small inclusion(s)
  • SI Small Inclusion(s)
  • I1 Included
  • I2 et I3- Inclusion 2 and 3

The choice of the diamonds by the creator Philippe Tournaire

Philippe Tournaire uses for all his jewels of quality diamonds G VS, that is of Extra White in Very Small Inclusion.
In all his creation sentinels’ use diamonds is important. They allow using the force and the hardness of the diamond for protected the other stones. Their white brightness strengthens the contrast of colours.
Crimped diamonds are all of glittering size. The brightness and sparkling with this kind of size has no equivalent, it remains glistening in the time, unlike the other forms.

Once the materials, the stones and their colour chosen, we create jewels in three dimensions. Generally the choice of stones is made during the phase of conception , through sketches, drawings and the other attempts, however every stony composition is estimated on the finished detail.
