The manufacturing
The lost-wax casting process
The creation of moulds is the first step of the manufacture process. From this very moment, the jewel begins to take shape. They are made of wax at first, so that a replica can provide a visual image of the final product.
Once the prototype is approved, the wax is cast into a mould made of small compressed cooked rubber strips that can be vulcanised.
When it is dry, the wax will enable the artist to obtain a real-size model of the jewel to be produced. As soon as waxes are ready to be worked on, they are then checked and retouched so that the production of models can begin.
Wax trees will serve as support for wax jewels so that they can be worked on. The tree is moulded in a special plaster.
Once the wax is installed, the trees are ready to be turned into plaster. This stage turns the piece‘s shape into a negative plaster mould, ready to welcome melted metals.
Metals have to be heated up before they are injected in the mould. The heat will allow them to reach the stage of melting metals so that they can be cast into plaster moulds already established.
After being cooled down, the mould is removed to showcase the first version of piece.
The cut consists in removing each piece of the tree on which it was moulded.
It is now time for the second phase to start in the workshop: refining, alteration, polishing etc. An important part of the process can then begin.
