Mathieu Tournaire: a Different continuity

Mathieu Tournaire, a young jewelry designer from Maison Tournaire, is passionate about travel and has made it one of his most important sources of inspiration for designing and creating collections of character.

A Different continuity

For Mathieu Tournaire, it is the workshop of his father craftsman jeweler who embodies the moments of happiness of his childhood. He had as leisure activities with his father  Philippe Tournaire and learning various techniques specific to the jewelry creation.

Before following in his father's footsteps, Mathieu Tournaire wanted to emancipate himself and make his own way. Curious and open-minded, he loved to travel and travel the world to discover other places. He has always liked to adapt to different cultures and learn other languages.

The vocation to create having been stronger, Mathieu Tournaire was caught up with the passion of jewelry, passed on from his father.

The childhood of an artist

The children of Philippe Tournaire spent all their childhood in the workshop. "I fell into the studio when I was little. My first memories with my father are those where we were at the shop." explains Mathieu Tournaire.

There were times when Philippe Tournaire let his son fumble with the precious stones in search of harmonies of colors or jewels. "I loved having fun with the different materials that my father put at my disposal" explains Mathieu Tournaire.

However, "I never thought of doing my job and then often you want to make your own experiences, to find a way different from that of your parents".

Mathieu Tournaire had his bachelor in Montbrison, his hometown. He completed a master's degree in history and then an anthropology degree at the university in order to become a professor. This artist is passionate about Latin America, which led him to go to Brazil several times, "A country where I fell in love". "Then I went to Portugal where I taught French." Upon his return to France, this young jeweler worked in a college with handicapped students.

Until 2006, Mathieu was just giving a helping hand to the workshop in parallel with his work. He became aware of the pleasure he had in being in this environment and he decided to do his job. "I felt at ease in this creative environment where we combine both manual work and reflection on new projects." For a year this young talent went to enrich itself in the company Verney Dray before joining the workshops of Maison Tournaire.

Sources of Inspiration

Travel is an integral part of the life of this young jeweler. This taste of adventure owes it to his dad. Indeed, they traveled to the "roots" with his brother and father. "It was a huge chance because I learned a lot, it was another way of traveling than going to hotels where everything is clean, there it was necessary to manage with nature." Philippe Tournaire was passionate about the historical monuments and the heritage of the countries he visited, so he naturally transmitted this admiration for architecture to his children.

Today, Mathieu could not visit a country without visiting the culture and historical monuments of the country where he is. Through these journeys, his mother and father were able to pass on their taste to the historic buildings and to teach him a different view of the world.

Moreover, his thirst for inexhaustible novelties and discoveries of new horizons are manifested as much in the materials as in the concepts used for the creations of his jewels.

Creator from father to son

After his studies, Mathieu often came to make jewelry as soon as he had a moment. One day this future artist told his dad Philippe Tournaire that he would like to make jewelry. For the builder of this brand it was good news but he explained to Mathieu Tournaire the difficulties he could meet, always be compared or be the son of ...

It was important for Philippe Tournaire that Mathieu go elsewhere first, to legitimize himself and not to come as the son of the boss. He went to work a year in Lyon where he gained in technique. He then came back but "I knew it could only work because he was born and raised in the workshop."

Every Wednesday and weekend Mathieu Tournaire came to help the workshop, he quickly joined the team.
