Gold is a highly coveted precious metal. In the pure state, it has a yellow color and is in the form of a nugget.
To express the purity of gold, the carat is used as a measure. If a jewel is made of 24 karat gold, it means 100% pure gold. However, 24 karat gold is used very little in jewelry and jewelry because of its malleability. Indeed, pure gold is soft and hard to work, it is not strong enough to be molded.
To increase the rigidity of gold, it is combined with other metals such as silver, copper, palladium or zinc. Thus, 18 karat gold, the most commonly used in jewelry, is made up of 75% pure gold and 25% other metals. For example, 18-carat rose gold is a mixture of gold and copper. 18-carat white gold is composed of gold and silver, while 18-carat yellow gold is a mixture of gold, silver and copper.
Two punches make it possible to distinguish jewelry composed of precious metals:
-The first known as the "State Punch" which is represented by an eagle's head for 18-carat solid gold or a hippocampus for 24-carat gold.
-The other punch is that of the manufacturer, called "the punch of Master" which has a shape of diamond where are the name and initials of the Master of goldsmith and a symbol proper to the house of manufacture.
The gold marks very quickly and scratches easily under the effect of repeated rubbings. To preserve your jewelry, first remove it in situations that may deteriorate it. For example, when you play sports. Avoid putting jewelry in an environment exposed to chemicals, household, cosmetics. Also, when you do not wear them, it's best to store your gold jewelry in cloth pockets to preserve them.
