It enjoys great popularity for making jewelry. It is very light gray in color, often inducing an idea of shine. It is thus highly appreciated for its particular brilliance.
Silver also symbolizes power and prosperity. It is considered by alchemists the "metal of the moon".
Regarding oxidation, it should be known that a silver jewel oxidizes when it is in contact with moisture, perfumes or when not worn. Oxidation is a natural phenomenon, it occurs only on the surface of the jewel and it does not alter the quality of it. Pure silver, also called fine silver is softer than gold and platinum. So, like gold, it is combined with other metals such as copper to make it stronger. As for platinum, the purity levels of silver are indicated in shares of 1000 (maximum). The most common in jewelry is silver 925, also called Sterling silver. It consists of 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% copper. Another type of silver is also known: silver 958 or Britannia, composed of 95.8% pure silver.
To find out if your jewel is in silver 925, you have to find as a "punch of the State" a punch representing a head of Minerva (Greek goddess).
Silver is a metal that tends to tarnish over time and quickly lose its luster. Silver jewelry oxidizes naturally with air and moisture. The first trick is to wear them as often as possible. Indeed, when it is not worn, the silver too exposed for a long time to the air and the light is blackened quickly. Keep your silver jewelry in a closed bag away from the air and avoid exposing it to chemicals. To protect your silver jewelry, you can apply a layer of transparent varnish. To clean your jewelry at home, you can put a little toothpaste on a brush and gently rub your jewelry with it. Leave to act for a few moments then rinse with clear water. On the other hand, it is not advisable to clean your silver jewelry with a liquid cleaner.
